Following an invitation to work alongside Kevan Shaw of KSLD (external link), this was our response to a specially invited brief to light up the Pool of London area for a temporary lighting event early in 2007 - 'Switched On London'.
Our area to work with was 'The River' and the theme was 'Theatre', this led us to take Swan Lake as our principal inspiration. Universally recognised as one of the most popular classical ballets, Swan Lake has been produced in many arenas and many styles, but never quite like this.
This proposal abstracts the themes and drama of a tale that has many versions but is always spectacular. Deception and love are polarised using black and white/dark and light. Dozens of ‘swans’ become beacons, providing movement and pattern in the Pool of London, floating on a sparkling stage.
Two scenes are played out at opposite ends of the Pool near London and Tower bridges. Natural movement comes from the ebb and flow of the river while the dynamic brilliance of the light glowing from the ‘swans’ evokes choreographic patterns. Additional movement created by the wind, changing river currents, and waves from passing boat traffic make each performance unique.
The main performance is viewed at night, but the physical elements have a sculptural quality that gives this installation a dignified presence during daylight hours.
The installation will consist of two large arrays of internally illuminated latex balloons tethered in the river. The balloons will be mounted in the shallows, close to the shore and well away from the navigable waters. The balloons will contain dimmable light sources that will be pre-programmed to provide rhythmic patterns of light sweeping through the formations of balloons.
Update: unfortunately, time constraints prevented us from getting the required permissions from the Port of London Authority. However, next year is still an option and we are looking at alternative locations.
